Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring of the refurbishment of The Rope Walk Inn recorded a series of sediments, structural and artefactural remains reflecting the continued usage of the site from the 18th, or possibly 17th century. Given the limited area sampled during the watching brief firm conclusions could not be drawn. However, the proposed sequence hinted at two episodes of dumping of natural, domestic and industrial material to both raise and level the ground surface. A possible earlier compacted stone surface was also identified between these two phases. The earliest depositional phase (V) may have been carried out in the 17th century or as part of the excavation and subsequent landscaping resulting from the 'New Cut'. [Au(adp)] |
