Abstract: |
Excavations were carried out prior to and during redevelopment at a site where archaeological deposits dating from the 12th-13th centuries had been recorded during an evaluation. The site lay close to the medieval centre of Taunton. Excavation revealed evidence for domestic occupation of the site from the late 12th century onwards, with the main period of surviving archaeological activity dating from the late 12th to the 14th century. Evidence included fragmentary remains of timber and stone buildings, remnants of possible street metallings, boundary ditches and pits. Relatively few features and artefacts of 15th-18th century date were found, although walls, a probable blocked stone-lined drain and two pits containing 17th-18th century pottery and vessel glass were revealed. Later post-medieval pits and other features were also noted. [Au(adp)] |
