Abstract: |
A desk-top assessment of the works department site at St Paul's Cathedral, which was proposed for redevelopment, was undertaken. A 13th century chapel had lain on part of the site. During construction of the works department in the early 20th century, Roman pits and the remains of the medieval Pardon Churchyard were found. Roman burials, buildings and road metalling had been excavated nearby. The cathedral itself was established in 604 AD, and was rebuilt in the 11th-12th centuries and in the 17th century. Trial work, excavation and archaeological monitoring were recommended for different parts of the site. [AIP] |
