Abstract: |
An area of re-laid medieval floor tiles housed in the north tower of Stokesay Castle was recorded. The tiles had been bedded in mortar to form a surface in the Upper Room, located on the first floor. A photographic record was made following the removal of surface blackening from the tiles by conservators. The tiled area comprised 1502 tiles, and measured 4.79m by 4.33m. Most of the tiles were monochrome, probably having originally been dark red, black and yellow in colour. Despite cleaning, it was seldom possible to distinguish between glaze colours. Traces of surface decoration in yellow glaze were noted on many of the tiles. [AIP] |
