Abstract: |
Archaeological evaluation was undertaken on a development site at Station Road, Brompton-on-Swale by Northern Archaeological Associates on behalf of Randall Orchard Construction Ltd. A trial trench was machine excavated across the projected line of Dere Street to the north of the Roman town of Cataractonium and a second trench was placed to establish whether any features were present alongside the road. There was no evidence for roadside structures and burials and the absence of in situ road deposits was consistent with previous large scale earth moving activity on the site which could have removed, or possibly sealed, the road. A small pit to the east of the line of the road may have been of archaeological significance although its precise date and function could not be verified. [Au] |
