Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a site which lay within an Area of Archaeological Potential was undertaken. A Grade II Listed Building, the former East India Dock Hydraulic Pumping Station, lay on the site. This was the last surviving example of five such stations in the West and East India Docks. Palaeolithic forest remains and prehistoric axes had been found in the area, within gravel deposits similar to deposits noted at the site. A potential for Bronze Age timber trackways was indicated by peat deposits. A small amount of Roman material had been recorded nearby, and documentary references to medieval settlements and routes existed. One medieval route may have passed through the south-eastern tip of the site. Two post-medieval routes had also crossed the site; evidence of associated roadside buildings could therefore exist. The construction of a modern viaduct across the site would have had some impact on any buried archaeological deposits, but it was concluded that the impact of other, now demolished, structures could not be determined, and that a trial trenching exercise would therefore be advisable.
