Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to a proposed redevelopment. Previous archaeological investigations on the site and in the immediate vicinity had produced substantial remains from the Roman and, to a lesser extent, remains from the medieval and early post-medieval periods. The archaeological potential of the site had been reduced to a large extent by the construction of the double basements and foundations of the present buildings and previous archaeological investigations in 1975. However, potential archaeological stratigraphy may have survived beneath the present basement levels. The redevelopment proposals indicated that in most cases the existing basement levels would be re-used in the new structure, thus the archaeological impact would be limited. However, some of the proposed groundworks may have had some impact on potential archaeological remains. It was proposed to open a trial pit in the single basement area to allow a more informed decision to be made on the level of further, if any, archaeological work required. [Au(adp)] |
