Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation was undertaken across the new access road route to the new football ground in order to fulfil a condition upon planning consent. The archaeological features revealed were confined to a 40m central section of the access road strip. These included two parrallel ditches, 5.5m apart, running north-east - south-west across the site, a large pit, two small sub-circular pits and a single stake hole. These features were an extension of a site excavated previously immediately to the north of the access road which consisted of ditches, gullies, pits and post hole structures. The features suggested domestic settlement with the ditches crossing the road strip likely forming the western boundary o the site. The pottery recovered from the features was early 1st millenium BC in date (Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age) and had close parallels with material from Foxholes Farm, near Hertford, with bowl and jar forms present.
