Abstract: |
The Vinery was built some time between 1839 and 1865, placing it either late in the ownership of Edward Carlyon or early in the ownership of Richard Harvey. Stylistic elements in the surviving original timbers would place it in the earlier part of this date range. Its primary function was as a vinery , but it also served as an ornamental glasshouse. It is not known with certainty when the heating system went out of use and it ceased to function as a vinery. It is definitely described as a vinery in 1882. A sale catalogue of the 1938 notes the existence of vineries. By 1963 vine growing had been transferred to the Top Garden. The Vinery has undergone extensive alteration and repair. Two distinct phases of repair have been identified apart from the more recently documented work. Enough of the original fabric remains at the east and west ends and along the north side of the roof to allow the original roof design and elevations to be reconstructed. Investigations in the Potting Shed as part of the recording work have exposed the original stoves for heating the Vinery. This, together with observations during the recording and the evidence from the evaluation has allowed the heating system to be explained and understood. [Au] |
