Abstract: |
The evaluation identified features dating to the later prehistoric and Romano-British periods across the study area, although many features contained no artefactual material. The character of the features identified suggested activity relating to land division and agricultural reduction rather than domestic settlement, although the palaeoenvironmental evidence suggested that there may have been some domestic activity in the vicinity of trenches 17, 26 and 28, and Romano-British pits were found in Trench 32. A shallow sub-rectangular pit containing a mixed deposit of burnt human bone, charcoal and burnt clay was found in Trench 21 and was identified as a pyre site, with associated stakeholes possibly representing a windbreak. A ditch also located in trench 21 was found to contain 10 sherds of pottery dating to the late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age. [Au(adp)] |
