Abstract: |
An archaeological observation of four trial pits was carried out prior to the proposed redevelopment of the site. Trial pits 1 and 2 were located in the basement of the Holy Trinity Church, and produced no archaeological features, indicating that the natural river terrace gravels had been truncated by the standing building. Trial pits 3 and 4 were located in the ground level yard to the west of the church and indicated that beneath c.2m depth of 19th and 20th century make-up dumps, a post-medieval and medieval soil profile was preserved, apparently reflecting agricultural activty. Beneath these deposits lay evidence of a north-south aligned stream channel, possibly the same feature observed at Kingsway Hall, some 150m to the south west. [Au(abr)] |
