Abstract:
Previous documentary work at the site showed that it had contained the medieval Town Hall and other buildings. The earliest phase located probably belonged to the early post-Conquest period, with open drains, rock-cut pits and possible timber structures recorded. The Garners Hill footway was consolidated by the deliberate dumping of deposits. The second phase involved widespread dumping and the construction of stone walled buildings in the southern end of the area. The third phase involved the construction of a large mortared stone wall corresponding with the boundary of the Town Hall. Other 18th and 19th century brick walls were encountered across the site. Two caves and a possible third truncated cave were found at the frontage and a passage to the south end of the site. There were grounds to suspect that the cave may have dated to the pre-18th century, although the infilling was probably 18th-19th century. [Au(adp)]
