Abstract:
In summary, it was clear that the prime significance of the study area was in terms of its maritime and industrial heritage. The study area covered part of the City Docks Conservation Area and included several Listed Buildings and structures, including the quay walls and mooring posts around the Cumberland Basin, the locks, Nos. 1-8 Old Dock Cottages and the Ashton Swing Bridge. While the Cumberland Basin road scheme of the 1960s had caused a negative physical and visual impact on the character of the area, a surprising number of features survived from the 19th and early 20th centuries. These still contributed to the character of the area and testified to its maritime and industrial past. The features around the Cumberland Basin itself, such as the quay walls, the North Entrance Lock and the North Junction Lock and their immediate environs were well maintained, largely because they were still working areas. However, away from the dockside parts of the are appeared rather neglected, particularly in the vicinity of the River Avon. No archaeological work had previously been carried out within the study area so the presence of significant archaeological features or deposits was largely unknown. The only recorded finds from the area were the recovery of prehistoric artefacts during the excavation of the Cumberland Basin between 1804-09. [Au(adp)]
