Abstract: |
<summary>Trial-trenches excavated to evaluate the archaeological constraints on proposed housing development on land in the southern outer bailey of Baynard's Castle showed that several phases of archaeological material, dated to the 12th to 14th centuries, lay immediately below topsoil. This material comprised chalk flooring, wall footings, and metal-working areas, the latter still containing furnace/hearth bases. Wooden sill beams from early 12th century wall structures and evidence for a wattle-and-daub structure were also recorded. Residual fragments of middle Saxon pottery and prehistoric worked flints were also recovered during the evaluation. {italon}AIP{italoff} |
