Abstract: |
The evaluation consisted of excavation and rapid documentary search, which was recommended by the Exeter Diocesan Advisory Committee in advance of building refurbishment. The excavation within the west end of Kenton parish church revealed a long aisleless nave preceding the present nave and aisles of the 15th century. A south aisle was added to it, perhaps in the late 14th century. The area was packed with burials. The earliest of unknown date were probably in shrouds, the latest dating to the 18th and early 19th centuries were in coffins and brick lined vaults. There was also evidence for late medieval tiles and medieval bell-casting. Roof tiles, pottery and clay pipes were also found. [Au(adp)] |
