Abstract: |
Four trial trenches were excavated as an archaeological evaluation of the site prior to its proposed industrial development. The evaluation revealed no significant archaeological features or material. Alluvial gravels and sands of the Cray Valley flood plain were observed in all of the evaluation trenches. At the north of the site these were sealed by natural brickearth deposits. To the south, the brickearthes were absent and the flood plain deposits were sealed by a sterile sandy subsoil, overlain by a re-worked topsoil containing 19th century material. The topsoil was buried by redeposited brickearth containing modern material, put down as levelling during the constructionof the Dertling factory in the 1950s. [Au(adp)] |
