Abstract:
The study area contained one SAM and three listed buildings, which were all designated as of national/regional importance. The SAM comprised a medieval moated site with adjacent fishponds, whilst the listed buildings consisted of two houses and a barn of late 17th century origin. It was recommended that zone of 100m around the SAM should not be entered by the proposed pipeline works. The listed buildings lay immediately outside of the study area, however, features associated with these structures could have lain within their settings and so within the study area. The Roman road, King Street, was within the study area and archaeological investigation was recommended to determine if archaeological deposits relating to the Roman road existed in that area. There were five unconfirmed sites located by cartographic or documentary reference which were considered to be of regional importance These sites involved a possible enclosure, possible Roman roads, possible brick kiln and a possible Anglo-Saxon or earlier settlement. Only one of the sites however, currently lay along the proposed pipeline route - the minor Roman road which may have been indicated by the fieldname 'Street Field'. Three sites or types of feature were given category 4 status. These features required recording prior to any pipeline development works. These sites included marl pits, ridge and furrow, and Byley Airfield. A field in which a Bronze Age palstave was recovered was given category 5 status and therefore should be subject to an archaeological watching brief during development. [Au(adp)]
