Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of three trial trenches, was undertaken in advance of the proposed extension to the present churchyard. The evaluation revealed a number of archaeological features, principally ditches, dating to the early medieval period. Two north/south-aligned ditches appeared to be at odds with the present boundaries in the vicinity of the site, though respected the church alignment. However, ditch F1021, was aligned more closely to the present boundaries and also the longer axis of the castle earthworks. The ditches almost certainly related to property boundaries, possibly early glebe land before the creation of the old Guildhall boundaries. The north-south ditches, in particular, appeared to mirror the present eastern churchyard boundary. [Au(adp)] |
