Abstract:
The evaluation comprised one 10m by 2m trench which was excavated to a depth of between 0.75m to 1m. The evaluation identified the presence of cut features dating from the late medieval period to the later post-medieval periods. Accordingly an excavation ensued and one open area, in the footprint of the proposed basement, was excavated. The earliest feature was an undated east-west ditch and two undated gullies running perpendicular to the ditch. The earliest dated activity was represented by two medieval pits. Post-medieval features comprised more pits and post holes. Eleven late 17th to early 18th century pits were recorded across the site. Finds recovered from these pits were dominated by pottery reasonably associated with an apothecary. Late 18th century pits may have indicated gravel extraction and a 19th century cess pit and wall foundations probably indicated an extension to the building that fronted on to The Grove. The most significant results of the excavation was the assemblage of pharmaceutical vessels, which would be the main focus of the further analysis and would be the main emphasis of the final site publication.
