Abstract: |
Two trenches were excavated to evaluate the site in Saffron Walden. One of the principal reasons for the investigation was to determine whether the inner bailey ditch of the nearby castle ran across the site. No trace of this feature was found. The investigation revealed evidence of two major activities on the site of 18th century date, and possibly contemporary. Evidence of chalk extraction was found, possibly for burning to produce lime; and the possible creation of a garden. [Au(adp)] |
