Abstract: |
The stage 1 evaluation consisted of a walkover and gradiometer survey. The walkover survey established that ridge and furrow earthworks were extant over virtually the whole area of the proposed development. The gradiometer responses were indicative of former ridge and furrow ploughing regimes even in areas where it was no longer visible. A number of anomalies were also identified which were caused by modern features. A faint positive anomaly of possible archaeological origin was identified in the south-eastern part of the survey area adjacent to two isolated areas of positive response, which probably represented areas of burning. Two discontinuous anomalies forming an acute angled return were observed in the north-east of the site. It was possible that the anomalies represented the remains of archaeological features that were cut by ridge and furrow ploughing. [Au(abr)] |
