Abstract: |
Archaeological excavations in the High Street area demonstrated that the area had been subjected to much disturbance from the late 17th century to the present day. The earliest features on the site were the cut for a wall and cesspit which was dated to the late 11th or early 12th century. If this was the case then the cut represented the foundation trench for the rear wall of a building associated with William FitzOsbern's new market place, built in c. 1068. Other features relating to later post-medieval activity were also revealed which included a well and yard surfaces. [AIP] |
