Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the proposed development site. The site was located at the rear of tenements which may have had origins in the medieval period. In the post-medieval period buildings were present on the site in the west and north-eastern parts. The modern development of Gilesgate Court and an 18th century Grade II Listed Building fronted onto Market Street on the southern part of the site. Upstanding sandstone walls were still present, comprising the remains of a vennel, retaining and boundary walls. Groundwork investigations showed that remains of the post-medieval structures survived in situ below the surface. Between 0.5m and 3.4m of made ground was also identified over the site. Elements of post-medieval/19th century structures survived below and above ground. A brief photographic survey of those structures exposed, together with any exposed during development, was recommended. It was possible (but not demonstrated) that deposits relating to the medieval exploitation of the area may have survived at depth in a small area in the eastern part of the site, where no post-medieval buildings had been constructed. A watching brief during disturbance of the area was recommended. [Au(abr)]
