Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment and site appraisal of a water pipeline corridor at Kirbymoorside in the Vale of Pickering was undertaken. The corridor route was assessed for its impact on potential archaeological sites and monuments, and as a result of documentary investigation and site reconnaissance three sites of potential archaeological significance were identified. The site of a row of buildings recorded on 18th and 19th century maps of the town, and adjacent ridge and furrow earthworks were to be bisected by the corridor in a field to the east of Howe End. The excavation of trial trenches to evaluate the nature, extent and date of the structures, and their relationship to the ridge and furrow was recommended. Where the pipeline was to run immediately adjacent to the wall of the present-day graveyard a watching brief was recommended. A watching brief was also recommended where the corridor ran to the east of the Scheduled Monument of Neville Castle on the northern outskirts of the town. [Au] |
