Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that cropmarks representing enclosures, linear features, ring ditches and trackways lay to the north and south. Excavation of one cropmark site had revealed that it represented a ploughed-out Neolithic long barrow. Fieldwalking in the vicinity of the southerly cropmarks had yielded artefacts of Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, possible Bronze Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval date. The earliest documentary reference to the property of Durward's dated from 1284; the present Hall had been built in 1850. It was concluded that archaeological deposits could have extended into the grounds of the Hall, and that they would be most likely to have survived in the area of the garden, and possibly beneath the less substantial outbuildings. The Hall and outbuildings were all comparatively recent rebuilds of older structures; any excavation beneath the existing buildings would be likely to uncover evidence of these structures. [AIP] |
