Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed road improvement scheme identified numerous archaeological sites within the vicinty, although only three known archaeological sites were found to lie within or adjacent to the study area. These consisted of the Asthall Barrow (SAM15), Akeman Street and a possible Roman cemetery. A number of ill-defined sub-rectangular features were visible on aerial photograps between the road to Swinbrook and the line of Akeman Street, possibly representing the remains of Romano-British settlement. Geophysical survey identified possible pits and ditches in the area of the Brize Norton/Swinbrook junction, possibly associated with a Roman cemetery and situated on both sides of Akeman Street.
