Abstract: |
<summary>Excavations were undertaken at Rixon Gate following the discovery of archaeological features during topsoil-stripping prior to gravel extraction. At least two roundhouses dating to the Iron Age period were revealed. These were surrounded by a curvilinear enclosure ditch, which in turn was incorporated into the layout of a Romano-British settlement; several phases of activity relating to this settlement were distinguished, culminating in the creation of a square area divided into four separate "paddocks" or fields. Evidence of at least one Roman-style building in the vicinity was also identified, and a pair of north-south aligned human inhumations revealed. Systematic scanning with a metal-detector resulted in the recovery of a large quantity of metal objects. {italon}AIP{italoff} |
