Abstract: |
An earthwork survey was undertaken of two previously unrecorded earthworks located within Highgate Wood. The work was instigated and funded by the Greater London Archaeological Advisory Service of English Heritage, who wrote the original specification for the survey. The survey delineated and modelled the principle physical characteristics of two earthwork features and the surrounding topography. The first and more major of the earthworks was a complex linear feature, primarily consisting of a double bank and triple ditch, but with a portion of single bank and double ditch. This monument was 350m in length and ranged from 8m to 23m in width. A second and less substantial curvilinear single bank and ditch earthwork, located some 30-40m south of the first, was also recorded. This feature was circa 120m in length, had a maximum width of 5-6m and was noticeably less pronounced in height than the first. The digitally captured data was presented as contour plots, digital terrain models and profiles through the earthworks at cardinal locations. [Au(adp)] |
