Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on the excavation of three test pits. These showed that the survival of the original road surface was at best variable and dependant upon the level of truncation due to services and 20th century road resurfacing. The best survival, due in part to the lower level of the road was on the north side of North Street. Twentieth century adaptation and re-use of the in situ kerbing on this side of the road to provide a sub-surface storm drain may also have accounted for the survival of some of the original pavement surface of limestone pitchings. However, the fourth test pit indicated that this survival was likely to have been patchy. [Au(abr)] |
