Abstract: |
Archaeological excavation identified early medieval levels and the remains of a 14th to 15th century industrial complex including a probable lime kiln and a tanners' and horn-workers yard. The animal skin and horn-processing site comprised small circular pits and larger rectangular pits, many of which were clay lined. Substantial quantities of pottery and animal bone were recovered and an archaeomagnetic date was obtained for the kiln. The industrial site was probably abandoned in the late 15th century, and in the 16th century the area was used for liquorice cultivation. [Au] |
