Abstract:
Planning permission had been granted for the construction of two residential blocks and one office building subject to a condition requiring a programme of archaeological works. This assessment included a site visit, monitoring of test pits and a consultation of sources comprising historical documents, maps and publications. As part of the study, the machine excavation of four geotechnical trial pits was monitored, with their stratigraphy recorded. Pit number 1 contained the remains of two brick walls, appearing to belong to a demolished late 19th-20th century property with no cellars. Pit number 2 contained a spread of brick rubble apparently related to the adjacent demolished brick structures, also dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Below the topsoil, subsoil of orange gravel and yellow Weald Clay were observed. In assessing the archaeological potential of the site it was apparent that there were no known significant remains on the site and that the potential for as yet unknown remains being present was negligible.
