Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during drainage works associated with landscaping immediately to the west of the medieval walled town, within Southampton. The site lay within a Local Area of Archaeological Importance, in an area of historic waterfront to the north of the medieval West Quay jetty. During the watching brief, evidence of stone and brick walls and evidence of layers which may have pre-dated 1800 was recorded. The probable footings of the town wall were identified at one location. Artefacts recovered included small amounts of medieval pottery and tile, 18th-20th century pottery and fragments of clay pipe. [AIP] |
