Abstract: |
Four trial trenches were excavated in response to a planning condition prior to redevelopment of the site. The evaluation identified two medieval pits and one possible pit of post-medieval date, located towards the rear of the plot. The natural geology in areas closest to the street frontage had been severely truncated by cellars and only late post-medieval foundations were located in these areas. One of the cellar walls and floor was constructed of late 19th century brickwork. The other cellar wall was constructed of chalk block and brick, which may have been earlier that the 19th century, although this cellar too was floored with late 19th century bricks. A single scraper of Neolithic or Bronze Age date was recorded as a residual find. [Au(adp)] |
