Abstract:
A total of 12 archaeological sites or find-spots were found to be located within the study area, highlighting the fact that the proposed quarry extension lay within an area of archaeological importance. These sites included 'crop-mark' sites that may have dated to the late prehistoric or Romano-British periods. From the medieval period, agricultural features, such as The Outgang - a division between the open fields and common lands- existed and Skelfleet Drain, a watercourse draining into the Humber. The remaining sites appeared to be post-medieval in date and consisted of Low Mill, a water mill, a milestone, and the former course of the Hull and Barnsley Junction Railway. Aerial photographs highlighted the existence of crop-mark sites in two parts of the proposal area and these areas were also the subject of a geophysical survey whose results substantiated the photographic evidence. Moreover, a single sherd of Samian ware was recovered from the area of one of the crop-mark sites during the walkover survey. This survey also defined features such as The Outgang, in terms of its physical form. Other features such as an apparent bank forming part of the eastern boundary o the proposed quarry extension and a low eminence in the north west corner of the site - a possible settlement location - were also noted during the survey. The results of the assessment suggested the presence of significant archaeological remains in some area of the proposed quarry extension, though it appeared that a large part of the site was likely to be devoid of such remains.
