Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief on the excavation of the foundations for two buildings revealed underlying Flood Plain Gravels, which sloped down towards the north-east of the site, and the thin layers of naturally deposited sands and clays above. These were overlain by an artificially deposited mixture of clay and gravel, possibly as ground levelling or raising, which was subsequently cut into by two pits of indeterminate date. This was then overlain by a thick homogenous layer of silty, sandy, clay, containing a sherd of Tudor pottery, probably representing another phase of ground raising. This was cut by two pits containing 18th and 19th century pottery, and overlain by 20th century topsoil. [Au(abr)]
