Abstract:
The assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed development. The site was located on the southern edge of the historic village core of Tatenhill. Earlier excavations of crop mark features, (including a SAM), both on the periphery and within the study area, were somewhat inconclusive, but indicated the presence of truncated features, some at least of Romano-British or even prehistoric date. Documentary sources were sparse, but comparisons of the Enclosure Map of 1811 and an early 19th century Terrier Document indicated the possible survival of earlier, possibly medieval, pattern of land division, which would merit further archaeological investigation. Site 9 included a ditched boundary coincident in 1811 with Dunstall liberty. Six potential sites were listed on the basis of aerial photographic evidence, but most interpreted as ditches. One pit alignment was reflective of the 1st millennium. It was recommended that archaeological investigation and recording prior to disturbance/destruction should be undertaken [Au(abr)]
