Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during excavations for a horse exercise ring. No archaeological features or deposits were observed, although a relatively large quantity of artefacts were recovered. These included a burnt flint fragment and two flakes which may have been of an Early Neolithic date, Roman pottery, two fragments of Roman tile, a substantial sherd of 8th century pottery and a small amount of post-medieval material. The condition of the finds was not consistent with repeated plough disturbance and redeposition. It was concluded that, if the artefacts had not derived from dumped material originating elsewhere, it was likely that they had originated from a nearby site or sites which had only recently begun to be disturbed by ploughing.
