Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of trenches, designed to locate and identify live services within a proposed development area. The site lay at the junction of five roads; its name, 'The Bridge', referred to an early river crossing. During the watching brief, it was found that disturbances associated with existing services had not affected significant archaeological horizons. It was concluded that Victorian development had masked earlier deposits, and that further groundworks would require archaeological monitoring only if carried out to a greater depth than the present works.
