Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken as part of an application for outline planning consent for a proposal for mixed-use redevelopment. The assessment identified likely moderate known archaeological potential both within the proposal site and in its immediate environs. An assessment of the nearby Parsons Green Depot had identified potential for multi-period occupation from the prehistoric-modern periods and the likelihood of much post-medieval and modern disturbance of potential underlying archaeological deposit. The archaeological excavation at the nearby Lady Margaret School had demonstrated the potential for multi-period occupation of the site. This located Late Bronze Age to Anglo-Saxon settlement activity. It was likely that medieval settlement features could be encountered within the proposal site. The proposal site may have been located on the northern periphery of the medieval hamlet of Parsons Green along with associated field systems. The early map evidence showed that until at least 1874 the proposal site was located within a semi-rural landscape of small market gardens and orchard plots. There was potential for survival of these smaller post-medieval and post-enclosure field systems within the proposal site. The map research also showed that by the end of the 19th century rapid housing, industrial development and underground railway construction had taken place within the proposal site and its environs. There would be much consequent potential disturbance and truncation of any earlier underlying archaeological deposits and features. The assessment also determined that no listed buildings or their settings would be affected by this proposal. However, Parsons Green Station was identified as an unlisted building of local historical and/or architectural importance on a register maintained by the Borough Council. The siting of this building in relation to potential development may have to be taken into consideration. Further issues that would have been need to be considered in relation to this was that the south eastern part of the proposal site was located within a Conservation Area and the whole area of the site was located within an Archaeological Priority Area designated y the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.
