Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological investigation was undertaken in order to establish the archaeological potential of the location of a proposed sewer overflow. Three trenches with a total length of c.61m were excavated, all of which contained post-medieval archaeological features. An alignment of flints and adjacent ditch may have represented a trackway running parallel with the existing road. Probable brick-earth extraction resulted in truncation across much of the study area. Such activity appeared to have occurred during the 17th-18th centuries with evidence of pits and a possible earlier structure. To the south of this area, a possible robber trench corresponded closely with the postulated alignment of the northern Abbey precinct wall. [Au(adp)] |
