Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a housing development, which lay adjacent to Abbey Farm, the site of a medieval farm complex founded in c. 1420. Surviving elements of this included the Manor Farm House which was a Grade I Listed Building, the 'Abbey Barn', which was a SAM and Grade I Listed Buiding, and part of the original boundary wall, which was Grade II Listed. Desk-based study had concluded that there was no existing evidence for further substantial medieval buildings within the proposal area, but that there was a reasonable probability that subsidiary structures may once have been present. During the evaluation, trenches were excavated within the two principal areas of the site where subsequent land-use would have allowed the survival of any archaeological remains. One area contained a boundary ditch and a large ditch or pit, both of which were considered to be post-medieval. Deep infilling deposits containing large quantities of modern debris were identified. In the second area, deliberately deposited soil with a depth of 2.5m was encountered, which was likely to represent upcast from the construction of outbuildings associated with the farm complex. It was concluded that the site did not appear to contain evidence for structures, deposits or artefacts associated with the medieval farm complex, or for archaeological activity of an earlier date.
