Abstract: |
The excavation of eleven trial trenches for geotechnical purposes in advance of development was observed by an archaeologist. Evaluation of a nearby site had recorded a deposit contining medieval and other pottery, whilst medieval and post-medieval pits had been observed at a second site, despite the removal of some archaeological horizons by later activity. During the evaluation, modern cellars and foundations which had reached the levels of undisturbed, natural deposits were observed. No archaeological remains were found. It was concluded that the modern cellars had removed any potential archaeological deposits, but that a remote possibility remained that isolated cut features such as wells or deep quarry pits could have survived. A minimal watching brief during development was considered adequate to ensure that no potential archaeological information would be lost. [AIP] |
