Abstract: |
Six small areas were excavated archaeologically prior to the construction of replacement air navigation light towers by the Ministry of Defence, within the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Danebury Ring, an Iron Age hillfort. Only one of the excavated pits, located on the inner bank of the middle earthwork, contained archaeological deposits. A feature of an uncertain nature, which may have been a ditch terminal or part of a pit or quarry hole, was recorded. Chalk blocks with probable tool marks were observed, and Iron Age pottery was recovered. Several prehistoric flint flakes were also found. It was concluded that the section of bank investigated probably dated from the original excavator's earthwork construction phase "C". [AIP] |
