Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation demonstrated the presence of depths of up to 2.25m of modern deposits, some of which may have been associated with the construction of the nearby Cleveland Bridge, built in 1826. Below this level pre-modern deposits were encountered, becoming waterlogged with depth. Quantities of animal bone were recovered, including the large part of a cow skeleton, but the only datable material comprised very small quantities of abraded Romano-British and medieval pottery mixed within the same deposit. The waterlogged levels exhibited good survival of palaeoenvironmental material, including organic matter and plant macrofossils, but these derived from deposits which were not securely dated.
