Abstract: |
The report concluded that, although the development site was located in an area of considerable archaeological interest, the survival of archaeological deposits across the site was likely to be limited. It was considered that single basements would have caused extensive truncation, with the result that there would be only a slight possibility of any horizontal stratigraphy remaining. Archaeological survival on the site was likely to have been represented by isolated features such as pits, cellars and wells cut deep into the natural stratigraphy. In order to determine more precisely the extent of modern truncation on the site, and therefore the appropriate archaeological response, it was recommended that any engineering test pits excavated within the development area be monitored by an archaeologist.
