Abstract: |
Within one of the trenches mortar footings, probably associated with a gateway to the de Caus walled forecourt of the house, were identified. Demolition deposits were present in both trenches, probably dating to early 18th century date and derived from simplification of the gardens, which began in 1632. The removal of the wall around the forcourt appeared to have occurred at this time. Underlying the 1632 garden were remains of compacted stone. A small quantity of disarticulated human bone was probably assocaited with the Abbey and had possibly been dug up and redeposited during the initial construction of Wilton House in the mid-16th century, or during the major phase of rebuilding in the mid-17th century.
