Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment was undertaken as a preliminary stage in development proposals. Previous investigations and historic evidence suggested that the surrounding area had a high archaeological potential. The site lay within the historic core of Burwell. The village was first recorded in 1060, the name meaning 'spring by the fort'. Burwell Castle was situated 200m to the Southeast. Excavations within the castle site had demonstrated occupation from the Roman period onwards. Due to medieval and post-medieval clunch extraction within the High Town area, it was possibly that earlier archaeology would have been disturbed, especially within the southern half of the site.
