Abstract: |
A combination of two foreshore surveys, auger transects and a watching brief on testpits greatly augmented the understanding of the area of the foreshore. In the light of a proposal to construct a pontoon adjacent to the jetty in the north end of New Globe Walk, the report noted the presence of numerous post-medieval features in the vicinity of the proposed structure, as well as a quantity of in situ Bronze Age alluvial deposits with evidence of an alder stand growing in them. It was possible that a palaeochannel existed in the vicinity of Southwark Bridge, although if it did, it seemed likely that deposits associated with it may have been subject to truncation by erosion.
