Abstract: |
A measured survey of the earthwork remains surrounding the deserted village (the deserted village being Lincolnshire Scheduled Ancient Monument No. 22715) in the parish of Spilsby was carried out in advance of drainage and ploughing. At least three phases of activity were identified. The earliest of these were the village remains with associated ridge and furrow and field boundaries. The village probably oridingated in the pre-Conquest period. Part of the open fields in the nort-east corner of the survey area were converted into enclosures, presumably for grazing stock. These had already fallen out of us by 1771 when a survey of the parish did not show these enclosures but recorded other field boundaries which exited substantially unchanged untill the present day. In order to place the results of the measured survey into context the unsurveyed earthworks were sketch-plotted from vertical aerial photographs. [Au] |
