Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that archaeological work undertaken there in the 1950s had recorded Roman remains, and that numerous other investigations in the vicinity had recorded evidence of Roman and medieval occupation. At the proposal site, a layer of burnt clay c. twelve inches thick which overlay an opus signinum floor, thought to have been of 1st-2nd century date, had been found. It was not known whether the burnt material had been dumped, or whether it had resulted from a fire on the site. The opus signinum surface was irregular in a way which suggested that it had covered pits or other disturbances, but it had not been possible to investigate these. The floor had been cut by pits in several places. The remains of a wall beneath the floor in the middle part of the excavated area had suggested that a more substantial building had once lain on the site. Two open timber-lined drains or gullies, which had probably been contemporary with the floor, were also found. No precise information regarding the location of this previous work or the extent of surviving archaeological deposits within the whole of the development area was available. It was concluded that there was a high probability of archaeological survival in the areas of the development which had not been disturbed by the foundations of the existing building, and that these deposits were likely to be Roman. A projected Roman road crossed the site, and it was conjectured that foundations of timber and stone buildings at the edge of the road could be present. Detailed information regarding the groundworks necessary for the proposed development were not available at the time of writing of the report, so that their potential impact on any surviving archaeological deposits could not be ascertained.
